Manic Music Monday - Nicki Minaj

Photobucket

Niki Minaj is the first lady of Lil Wayne's Young Money and she recently won Best Female in the Underground Music Awards. People get caught up in the fact that she's pretty and sometimes hypersexualized, not realizing that she is very talented. Homegirl can spit, but she also studied drama at New York's F.H. LaGuardia H.S. aka "The Fame School" (also my alma mater). Understand the talent that is about to be unleashed!

I've been disappointed with the way people have been interviewing her. OK, let's say, the way men have been interviewing her. Every Minaj interview so far involves the interviewer shamelessly flirting or making lame sexual innuendos, which of course she plays along with because that's a part of the game. But it shows that female emcees still aren't taken seriously. As a journalist who primarily focuses on hip-hop, and a woman who is a hip-hop head, that's frustrating. I want to see a real Nicki Minaj interview. I'm not knocking the flirting and sex talk, but it's been done before, find a different angle (or at least, be creative about it). Plus, I think she has a better story than that. However, in any event, I wish her much success as this isn't about the journalists (just a side rant).

She has recently released a new song called "Still I Rise" that you can download here. (Courtesy Jobari Johnson of hiphopgame.com)

Too many women rappers get pushed into that trap. Either they aren't hot enough or the hotness they do have is overplayed. At any rate, women rappers continue to get marginalized by these same undersexed knuckleheads who, at best, gloss over their actual talent.

But, these women have to take some blame themselves. Look at what she's wearing. You can see the outline of it lol. I didn't even know she was a rapper but from that image alone, I am not thinking rap. I am thinkin... something else.

Anyway, she's from NYC. I'll take a look only because of that. Yes, I am biased.

Ha ha. I know how she looks but haven't we seen it all before? I'm not a man so I can't think like one, but I'm like doesn't it get old? Wouldn't they want to take the convo a different route? *Shrugs

I mean a women needs to own her sexuality but with women in rap have to put their foot down and not play into the physical and mental characteristics often talked about in rap. You hear about the girl next door in R&B songs but in rap songs it's hood bitch this and hoochies that shake their ass blah blah blah. Don't get me wrong I love to let loose and gig at a club but I go stunten and full dressed unless it's some where blazing. Just Kill them with Class.

Anyways I digress. I'm down for women that proves that she has flows she can packages herself the way she sees fit. Although I don't know how I feel about the synthesized hook. I miss good R&B hooks.

Great blog mamas Imma ad it to my blog-a-dex.

Thanks for putting me on I'm finna be checken for her.

Based on her pic, it sounds like her sex appeal is part of her gimmick. So naturally, these type of "journalists" will interview her in that manner. I mean, Plies and Kanye West aren't interviewed in the same manner, ya know. It is true that female rappers have always been marginalized, but like Anthony Taurus said, they need to take some of the blame.
